Catching up with Salisbury graduate Bryn Burkholder
What is your full name?
Bryn Burkholder
When did you graduate from Salisbury?
1999
Tell us about your life since high school.
I graduated from Duke University, where I studied biology and watched a lot of basketball. I moved to Philadelphia for medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. While I was there, I decided to go into ophthalmology, and I did my residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I took a job here at Johns Hopkins as a specialist in something called uveitis, an inflammatory eye disease. Hopkins is a teaching hospital, so a big part of my job is teaching ophthalmologists-in-training and supervising them while seeing patients and doing surgery.
What are you most proud of personally and/or professionally?
Professionally, I’m most proud of my work teaching residents and fellows; it’s the most rewarding part of my job. Personally, I’m proud that I’ve stayed physically active since high school, competing in club field hockey in college, intramural basketball in med school, and lots of running, swimming, and bike races along the way.
How has the pandemic impacted you and what have you learned from it?
As a physician, I couldn’t work from home, so we made changes in our clinical practice and operating rooms to keep everyone as safe as possible. This means that I use N95 masks and face shields all day at work. I’ve learned the importance of good leadership in times of crisis.
What was your favorite high school memory?
I have so many great memories at SHS, most of them involving sports, and it’s hard to pick a favorite. Highlights include bus rides with the hockey team on game days, turning around a one-win basketball season my sophomore year to become a top team in the league my junior/senior years, and breaking the school record in the 4 x 800 meter relay with my sister and two of my best friends. I also had a blast performing in the high school play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, my senior year.
How is your family doing?
My parents, who are both physicians, have retired and are enjoying their new roles as grandparents. My sister, Alissa Burkholder Murphy (Class of ’01) and her family, which includes my two nephews, moved to Baltimore last year. My sister teaches engineering at Johns Hopkins, which was her alma mater. It’s the first time that she and I have lived in the same city since high school, and it’s been really great having them here.
If you could meet anyone (alive or dead), who would you choose and why?
I could list a number of superstar doctors/scientists, or political leaders, or female sports icons that I’d love to meet, but, honestly, who would be my first choice? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler-- two hilarious, smart, bold, leading ladies in the male-driven field of comedy.
Who is your role model and why?
Growing up, my parents were important role models for me. My mom was one of just a few females in her med school class. Conversely, my med school class was the first one in the history of the school to have more women than men, so I’ve always felt very proud that she was among the pioneers who paved the way for me and my female classmates. And my dad is an ophthalmologist too, so clearly he was hugely influential in my career path.

A little Q&A with Salisbury Senior Margaret Carl
What is your full name?
Margaret Rose Bernadette Carl
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include sewing, thrifting, baking, and making jewelry.
If you have pets, list what kind and names.
I have a chihuahua dachshund named Sioux who I have had since I was four years old. I also have a turtle named Shelly, and six chickens.
How would your friends describe you?
My friends describe me as eccentric, compassionate, and giving.
What is your favorite subject?
My favorite subject is probably art. I have always loved creating art, not to say I did not work really hard to get where I am now!! Art takes a lot of practice and patience, I think that skills in art are often dismissed because many people believe that you are just born with the talent. Just like sports, you also have to practice over and over again.
Who is your favorite teacher?
MRS. BORTHWICK!!!!! I am so grateful to her and all she has taught me and helped me through. I don’t know what I would have done without her!! Honorable mention goes to Ms. DosSantos and Ms. Reinecke.
What is your favorite movie?
But I’m a Cheerleader, when I first watched it I was amazed by how relatable and humorous it was and now I share it with every last one of my friends.
Who is your role model and why?
My role model is Janis Ian because at a young age she caused a lot of ruckus due to her strong social views and how she expressed them. I feel a really strong connection to her and her music and I find myself inspired by her every day.
What’s next after graduation?
I am planning on attending Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University. I plan on going for art education and after graduation want to get certified to become a family and consumer science teacher as well.

A little Q&A with Salisbury Senior Nevaeh Robinson
What is your full name?
Nevaeh Robinson
What are your hobbies?
Between school, work and family, I have limited space for entertainment and personal time. However, I enjoy singing around the house and photography. Music and taking pictures are both passions and hobbies of mine. I enjoy long drives and singing in the car with my boyfriend and conversations with my family. Any free time I get goes to enjoying life and everyone around me.
If you have pets, list what kind and names.
I have a pitbull, her name is Meeka.
How would your friends describe you?
My friends would most likely describe me as “the mom” of the group. Always compassionate and organized, but ready for a good time. I am always prepared with the tide-to-go or the napkins in the car. I would probably be described as sincere and uplifting.
What is your favorite subject?
I love many subjects, but my favorites are within the social sciences. I could not choose one, but I currently find Sociology to be the most interesting. The social sciences department within high school initiated my interest in the field of Sociology within my future.
Who is your favorite teacher?
Although I appreciate and have learned so much from many teachers, Mrs. Schneider has been a crucial part of my learning experience as well as my individual growth. She is a support both in and out of the classroom.
What is your favorite movie?
There are too many movies to choose from, but I love the Step Up series. My mom and I could watch each movie on repeat throughout my childhood. I now enjoy watching the series with my boyfriend and siblings. Highly recommended!!
Are you involved in any community service projects?
I am currently and have previously been involved in numerous service projects. Throughout my education, I have enjoyed participating in clubs/activities such as Key Club and Stars who partake in local volunteering opportunities such as Special Olympics and food bagging for the homeless. In addition, I (along with a peer) created our community outreach club (G.I.V.E.) within Salisbury High School. G.I.V.E. (Get Involved, Value Everyone) is a space where volunteering and participating in outreach is our main goal. We run 3 annual drives for Third Street Alliance, New Bethany Ministries, and Valley Youth House. All of the donations go directly to the church/nonprofit and our club members get a hands on experience with volunteering and outreach work.
In addition to clubs and organizations within school, I have volunteered for Camelot for Children. A year round program for children with disabilities. The “campers” get an individualized experience within the camp as volunteers treat them as any other human. The children get a sense of belonging and excitement from attending the camp.
Who is your role model and why?
I look up to so many people within my life, but my parents are definitely my biggest role models. My mom and dad are not only the most hard working people I know, but they exude love and positivity throughout everyday. They both taught me important lessons involving basic respect, future goals, and getting through struggles. “You can never achieve your goals and aspirations, if you never try.” - Mom and Dad
What’s next after graduation?
I plan on attending Temple University for my Bachelor’s Degree. I will be double majoring in Organizational/Developmental Business Management and Sociology. I hope to positively impact as many people as possible throughout my college career and later in life as well.
