PIAA swimming: Salisbury sophomores showing promise for future
By Chuck Hixon
Salisbury’s Phoebe Ballek and Olivia Amorim have been competing with and against each other for years now, so their pairing in the consolation round of the 200-yard freestyle event at states was no shock to either of them. The duo was in separate heats in the preliminaries but finished 12th and 15th respectively at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships being held at Bucknell University.
“I finally got under the 1:59 mark,” said Amorim, who finished with a 1:58.68 in the consolation round. As she spoke, Ballek was cheering the milestone.
Amorim also qualified in the 100-yard butterfly and swam a 1:02.03 in preliminaries but did not qualify for the finals. Ballek returns on Saturday to swim in the 500-yard butterfly.
Those finishes moved both sophomores into the consolation round separated by four lanes. When the water stopped flying, Ballek finished 13th and Amorim finished 14th overall.
“We’ve been competing with each other for about five years now and it’s always fun to race someone you’re friends with,” said Amorim. Ballek agreed and quickly added that “it’s better when we’re right next to each other.”
While Ballek would have liked to drop her time from the 1:57.67 she swam in districts, overall, she was happy with the 1:58.35 she posted at Bucknell. For Amorim, the event was a milestone as she improved on her personal best time.
Saucon Valley sophomore Julia Cort battled Notre Dame-Green Pond junior Donja Tripp in the 50-yard freestyle. Cort edged Tripp in the prelims by just .05 seconds, which put them one lane apart in the consolation heat where Cort finished 10th with a time of 24.33 seconds. Tripp had to settle for 12th place with a time of 24.43 seconds, just .01 second out of 11th.
“Overall, it was good,” Cort said after her final swim. “I dropped a little time from the preliminaries, so it was okay, and I was happy with that.”
Cort also swam with Angelina Dechert, Amanda Dettmar, and Katryna Price on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished 19th for Saucon Valley.
Cathedral Prep leads the team standings in the girls competition with 102 points. Amorim and Ballek collected seven points for Salisbury to leave the Falcons tied with Saucon Valley for 38th place. Notre Dame-Green Pond is 46th with five points to round out the local team scores.
Oliver Ritchey of Moravian Academy made the most of his freshman season by qualifying for states in both the 200-yard IM and the 500-yard freestyle. In the 200-IM, Ritchey placed 19th, with a time of 2:03.91 and will wait until Day 2 of the 2A competition to swim in the 500-freestyle.
Northwestern Lehigh’s Hunter Slaski qualified for two events at states and finished 21st in the 100-yard butterfly and 25th in the 200-yard freestyle and will look for a return to states in his senior season. Slaski’s younger brother, Hayden, a freshman, won the 2A diving competition at districts and took 15th at states, finishing with a final score of 306.20.
In the boys standings Indiana (105 points) and Mount Pleasant (104 points) are battling for the top spot. Northwestern Lehigh is tied for 54th from the two team points earned in diving.
Only swimmers and divers who finish in the top 16 spots pick up points for their team and the top eight finishers also receive medals.
In addition to Ballek competing in the 500-freestyle on Saturday, Cort returns in the 100-yard backstroke competition and will also be on the Panthers 400-yard freestyle relay team. Palisades junior Tori Oldford gets her first shot at a medal in the 100-yard breaststroke. Ritchey returns for Moravian Academy to swim in the boys 500-freestyle and junior Nick Janis of Allentown Central Catholic battles in the 100-yard freestyle.
