Getting to Know Salisbury Junior Emily Suter
Emily Suter created a design of a falcon in flight during her art class last year. SHS principal Ms. Morningstar liked the image so much she wanted it displayed on a high school wall.
Along with classmate Kaitlyn Zong, Emily painted the falcon in a stairwell last summer. The Salisbury duo finished the job over four days and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
“That was more fun than anything,” Suter said. “We had music playing and we were on ladders. It was a gigantic paint by numbers.”
While Emily likes art, her absolute favorite subject is history. Not surprisingly, Emily loved the field trips she took to Gettysburg and Washington D.C. She had her favorite teacher Mike Barna for Honors American Cultures II last year.
“Emily has great interest and passion for history,” Mr. Barna said. “She will do anything that is asked of her. When we needed someone to put together the Veteran’s Day flyer, Mr. Linsenbigler suggested Emily and Kaitlyn.”
Emily has not made a college choice yet but for sure she is interested in Gettysburg College and Elizabethtown College. Mr. Barna has a son at Gettysburg and a daughter at Elizabethtown so he and Emily have had discussions about both schools.
Extracurricular activities are also important to Emily. She is on the scholastic scrimmage team, which advanced to the knockout round of a recent event at Southern Lehigh. Emily is also an avid reader and is involved in the school’s literary club. At times, the literary club and Euphoria, the school’s literary magazine, combine forces for Reading Olympics.
“You compete against other schools,” said Emily, who is an excellent student and is a National Honor Society member. “You get a list of books, you read them and then you get quizzed on them.”
Other hobbies for Emily include ice skating, playing the piano and fishing. She also likes to watch sports, especially basketball. Emily has an older brother Alex, who plays golf and baseball for Salisbury.
Emily also spends time with her close friends Kaitlyn Zong, Rhiannon Neipert, Alexandra Soleta and the Hirst sisters, Amanda and Ashley. And since July, Emily has been worked at Valley Wellness Center. She babysits kids while their parents work out and climbs the rock wall when she has the opportunity.
“I am also qualified to run the rock wall and give members their training cards,” Emily said. “I’m allowed to climb as long as no one is in the room. It requires a lot of upper body strength which I have so it’s always fun when I get to climb.”
