Getting to Know Salisbury Senior Jeffrey Seybolt
Jeffrey Seybolt arrived at Salisbury High School as a shy 9th grader. He had attended Swain School, and although he knew some of his Salisbury classmates from youth sports, Jeffrey was still a little uneasy.
Thinking back, Jeffrey--now a senior--regrets not getting involved in more activities when he began high school. He waited till 11th grade to join the tennis team and spends much of his free time playing tennis with classmate Dylan Weber.
“My goal is to be a starter this year,” Jeffrey said.
Jeffrey loves playing all sports. When he is not on the tennis court, Jeffrey can be found shooting baskets or watching his favorite player, Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker. Jeffrey also played baseball growing up and met Dylan, Lucas Bauer, Matt Hass, and Donovan Zong through their shared interest in baseball.
Jeffrey also has non-athletic interests. This year, after encouragement from Dylan, he joined the debate team.
“Being in debate was something I always considered; then Dylan said there was an opening, so I joined,” Jeffrey said. “It’s really cool to try and learn how to form a good argument and dive into topics I wouldn’t typically learn about it. ”
Jeffrey is an excellent student and is a member of the National Honor Society. He describes himself as hard-working, honest and a little sarcastic. Jeff thinks his friends would say he is determined and funny.
“I was able to get to know Jeff over the time he was in my Biology and Spanish II classes,” SHS teacher Ms. Laura DosSantos said. “Jeff has always been mature. He is quiet but has a great sense of humor. He has a strong work ethic and is very respectful.”
Losing a close friend to osteosarcoma last year was very hard on Jeffrey. The untimely passing has had a lingering impact on him.
“I realized how precious our time truly is,” Jeffrey said. “His [Jeffrey’s friend’s] motto was relentless positivity, and that stuck with me. I may not be the most positive person, but I strive to be more positive. He was very strong through those tough times, which made me understand how positive he truly was. I am grateful for the time I spent with him.”
Jeffrey, whose older sister Alex attends DeSales University, has narrowed his college choices to Gettysburg College, University of Delaware and the University of Pittsburgh. He plans to major in engineering or business.
“I am nervous to graduate but I am excited at the same time,” Jeffrey said. “It will be different to transition again but I am excited to see where it takes me.”
