Catching up with Salisbury graduate Shane Wittman
What is your full name?
Shane Michael Wittman
When did you graduate from Salisbury?
2016
Tell us about your life since high school.
After high school, I attended Lock Haven University for one year, until transferring to Thomas Jefferson University where I graduated with a degree in Health Sciences, a minor in Exercise Science, and Summa Cum Laude honors. Through my undergraduate years, I regularly participated in volunteer events. A few of the many were; a medical mission trip to Honduras, a Muscular Dystrophy summer camp, and in the St. Luke’s acute rehab unit in Bethlehem. More recently, this past July I started graduate school at Thomas Jefferson to become a physician assistant. As of today, I have finished my second semester.
What are you most proud of personally and/or professionally?
Personally, I am most proud of obtaining my undergraduate degree and starting the journey to become a physician assistant because I set that goal in high school and knew how difficult it would be. Professionally, I am most proud to have created a lasting, positive impact on those who I've helped along the way and be known as a dependable, hardworking individual.
How has the pandemic impacted you and what have you learned from it?
The pandemic has had a tremendous impact on my educational experience. The majority of my classes are online, forcing us to miss valuable in person experiences like working on cadavers and performing physical exams in the clinical setting. Additionally, I have learned throughout the pandemic that flexibility is key. Having to stop in person classes and perform a head to toe physical exam like a telemedicine visit with a few days notice is one of many instances. After all, healthcare is a dynamic field so the pandemic has only prepared me more for the clinical setting.
What was your favorite high school memory?
The accumulation of time spent with my best friends year round created countless memories. Whether it was on the football field or in the weight room, many laughs were shared. Beating Southern Lehigh in football my senior year was just one of the countless highlights.
How is your family doing?
My family is doing well. My sister Quinn is disappointed basketball got delayed. My brother (Colin) is doing well and has been working. Both my father and uncle are good.
If you could meet anyone (alive or dead), who would you choose and why?
I am not sure.
Who is your role model and why?
Ever since I was young, my father has always been my role model. The work ethic that he demonstrates and instilled in me has put me in the position I am today. My father has allowed me to pursue all my goals to the fullest and made many sacrifices to ensure I would succeed. Whether it was in school, on the football field, or working construction, he has always pushed me to achieve my maximum potential.
