Catching up with Salisbury graduate Antonio Alvarado What is your full name? Antonio Alvarado When did you graduate from Salisbury? 2016 Tell us about your life since high school. Following graduation from Salisbury, I moved to Rochester, New York to attend the University of Rochester where I studied public health with a concentration in infectious diseases. Then, during the summer of my third year, I lived in New York City to participate in a public health program at Columbia University and to work with vector-borne diseases at the NYC Department of Health. For reference, vector-borne diseases are germs that are most often spread by insects like mosquitoes, fleas, or other insects/arthropods. Hence, Zika virus, West Nile virus, Lyme disease, and malaria are all vector-borne diseases. My job entailed collecting ticks and mosquitoes, identifying the species that could spread disease and sending them for laboratory testing. I HATED bugs, so I thought that this job was going to be the worst. Oh, how I was wrong. Each day was a different adventure and working with vector-borne diseases brought a newfound passion into my life. The field biologist with whom I spent most of my days with, worked at a laboratory in an abandoned military fort in Queens and lived an exciting lifestyle fueled by curiosity that I admired. In fact, he led my peers and I to “West Nile virus ground zero” at the abandoned Flushing Airport where CDC-officials believed this site to be the breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that first transmitted the virus in the 1999 outbreak. After this program, I presented some research on the mosquitoes that breed in the NYC sewers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. Now, I am a graduate student at Cornell University in the Entomology Department studying insects and vector-borne diseases. Never in my life would I have thought that I would be studying bugs, but here I am and I love it. It is so important to have an open-mind and to be open to learning/experiencing new things. This summer, I will be heading into the Chihuahuan Desert, on the border of Texas and Mexico, in the middle of nowhere, to collect kissing bugs in Big Bend National Park. Kissing bugs spread the parasite that causes Chagas disease, so I will need to be very careful and I will be submitting the bugs for laboratory testing. The goal is to publish some novel research! What are you most proud of personally and/or professionally? I’ve worked extremely hard for every accomplishment in my life; from graduating high school to becoming the first college graduate in my family, leading numerous philanthropic events in Rochester, presenting research at the CDC, and attending Columbia and Cornell University. As a high school student, I never would have imagined accomplishing any of that. How has the pandemic impacted you and what have you learned from it? Well, as almost everyone can agree, life is anything but normal right now. Sadly, being the first person to graduate college in my family, I was unable to walk the stage in May. However, I’ve spent more time with my family and cherished every second of it. I’ve learned to appreciate the little things in life more; have fun, live a little, laugh more, love more, spend more time with your family, do crazy things like living in a desert for an entire summer, don’t take it so seriously! Life is too short to dwell on things. Be yourself and love yourself. What was your favorite high school memory? Definitely taking AP Biology with Mrs. Wilson; we had the opportunity to dissect a shark, we read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (amazing book), learned about plant biology, and so much more. I feel as though that class prepared me to become the biologist/entomologist/epidemiologist that I am today. How is your family doing? My mom, dad, and sister are doing well! My mom just started her new job with the Salisbury Township Police Department and loves it, my dad is still working during the pandemic, and my sister Jessenia is a senior at Salisbury High School. If you could meet anyone (alive or dead), who would you choose and why? I would love to meet Sir David Attenborough. He is a naturalist from England, and the voice of numerous nature documentaries like Blue Planet. I feel like I could talk to him for hours about his life story and crazy adventures. Also, Matthew McConaughey. I had a lot of weird experiences that have led me to talk with some famous scientists like Forrest Galante, the wildlife biologist and host of Animal Planet’s Extinct or Alive. He gave me his phone number and we talked about ticks and mosquitoes for a little! Who is your role model and why? I feel like it is impossible to narrow down one role model; I have learned a little from almost everyone that I have met in my life and look up to many people. However, the obvious answer is my family members, all the way from my mom to my great grandmother; without them, I definitely wouldn’t have become the man I am today. A lot of what I do is to make my family proud. #yoursalisbury
