Catching up with Salisbury graduate Kelly Garrigan
What is your full name?
Kelly Garrigan
When did you graduate from Salisbury?
2014
Tell us about your life since high school.
After graduating high school, I went to Saint Joseph’s University and received my B.S. in Interdisciplinary Health Services in 2018. Before deciding on a career path, I took a year off after graduating from college and did some substitute teaching at William Allen High School, which I really enjoyed but ultimately decided to pursue nursing. I then attended Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing and graduated in May 2020 with my BSN. After taking my boards, I started working in the emergency department as an RN in the summer. While working full time, I have started taking courses to pursue my master’s in nursing.
What are you most proud of personally and/or professionally?
I am most proud of joining the healthcare field at this time. Nursing school was challenging as it was a one year accelerated program plus three of the 12 months were all virtual learning. Starting as a new grad nurse has its own challenges, but with the addition of the pandemic, it has made my first year in nursing a very unique experience.
How has the pandemic impacted you and what have you learned from it?
The pandemic has been a very challenging time both professionally and personally. On a positive note, it has allowed me to spend more time with my family and my dog. I also found joy in spending more time outdoors and I took up hiking.
What was your favorite high school memory?
It is hard to pick just one so one of my favorite high school memories was my senior year of basketball when we made it to the state playoffs. My other favorite high school memories were participating in the musicals and chorus. To this day, I am very grateful that Salisbury gave me the opportunity to explore many of my interests.
How is your family doing?
My family is doing well. We are very fortunate that everyone has stayed healthy! Abby graduated from Temple in May 2020. Our dog, Olive, has been our therapy pet throughout this pandemic!
If you could meet anyone (alive or dead), who would you choose and why?
Given the vast amount of time we’ve had at home, many of us spent a lot of time streaming. My favorite show that always puts a smile on my face is Schitt’s Creek, so if I could meet anyone, I would want to meet the cast of Schitt’s Creek. They are all very funny actors and it would be fascinating to hear about their creative processes.
Who is your role model and why?
My role model is Michelle Obama. She is the definition of class and at the forefront of women empowerment. She’s strong, bold and passionate about bettering communities. Her compassionate leadership inspires me to be a better leader.
