A little Q&A with Salisbury Senior Andrew Sabol What is your full name? Andrew Sabol What are your hobbies? My hobbies are running, programming, hiking, biking, 3D printing and computer aided design. How would your friends describe you? My friends would describe me as hardworking and creative. What is your favorite subject? My favorite subject would probably have to be economics with Mrs. Kennedy because it allowed me to get a better understanding of how our money is actually used and what possibly could change depending on our leading officials. Who is your favorite teacher? I can’t really choose but it has to be between Mr. Frick and Ms. DosSantos. Mr. Frick because he got me more interested in history after having him for AC I and also because he has been one of my soccer coaches since 7th grade. Ms. DosSantos because she helped me with learning more Spanish and also she gave me a class that allowed me to open up and show my creative side. What is your favorite movie? My favorite movie would have to be the Star Wars saga because it got me into developing my creative side and also my imagination when I was younger which has since fueled my ideas for future ways for us to travel and some new technologies that might have an impact on the world. Are you involved in any community service projects? Before the pandemic I was an active member of G.I.V.E. and I was also an altar server at my church. Who is your role model and why? My role models aren’t just my parents. Yes most people would say their parents are their role models because they have built them to be what they are today. However, if I would look outside of my home and look at things like my hobbies and what I want to do. My role model would have to be Albert Einstein because he challenged many people as he came up with the idea for relativity and also his many breakthroughs in his field. What’s next after graduation? I will be attending Wilkes University and plan to study mechanical engineering and computer science. #yoursalisbury

A little Q&A with Salisbury Senior Emily Suter What is your full name? Emily Suter What are your hobbies? I love to figure skate. I’ve been taking classes for over two years now. I also love to draw, and I occasionally play the piano If you have pets, list what kind and names. I have a few fish, and a Chihuahua-pug mix (Chug) named Lily. How would your friends describe you? They would describe me as caring and passionate and determined. What is your favorite subject? History! I love listening to stories and piecing them together. And history is just one big story to me Who is your favorite teacher? Mr Barna. He’s the person who helped me realize I love history in the first place. I always say that if I could retake his Honors AC II class, I would do it in a heartbeat. What is your favorite movie? Forrest Gump. I first watched it when I was really young, and I still love it to this day. Are you involved in any community service projects? I’m a member of my local youth group who helps out the local community a lot. We host a lot of events, and the money either goes to the community or helping those in third world countries. We recently did something called the 30-Hour Famine, where we raise money by fasting for 30 hours. We raised over $2,000. All the money goes to an organization called World Vision, and directly helps kids suffering from hunger in third world countries. Who is your role model and why? My role models are my father and my mother. They’ve helped me through everything, the good and the bad, and through example, taught me how to care for others around me What’s next after graduation? I plan on attending Gettysburg College as a history major! I don’t know what career path I’ll go down, but as long as I can communicate my passion for history and make a change then I’ll be happy. #yoursalisbury

Catching up with Salisbury graduate Bryn Burkholder What is your full name? Bryn Burkholder When did you graduate from Salisbury? 1999 Tell us about your life since high school. I graduated from Duke University, where I studied biology and watched a lot of basketball. I moved to Philadelphia for medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. While I was there, I decided to go into ophthalmology, and I did my residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I took a job here at Johns Hopkins as a specialist in something called uveitis, an inflammatory eye disease. Hopkins is a teaching hospital, so a big part of my job is teaching ophthalmologists-in-training and supervising them while seeing patients and doing surgery. What are you most proud of personally and/or professionally? Professionally, I’m most proud of my work teaching residents and fellows; it’s the most rewarding part of my job. Personally, I’m proud that I’ve stayed physically active since high school, competing in club field hockey in college, intramural basketball in med school, and lots of running, swimming, and bike races along the way. How has the pandemic impacted you and what have you learned from it? As a physician, I couldn’t work from home, so we made changes in our clinical practice and operating rooms to keep everyone as safe as possible. This means that I use N95 masks and face shields all day at work. I’ve learned the importance of good leadership in times of crisis. What was your favorite high school memory? I have so many great memories at SHS, most of them involving sports, and it’s hard to pick a favorite. Highlights include bus rides with the hockey team on game days, turning around a one-win basketball season my sophomore year to become a top team in the league my junior/senior years, and breaking the school record in the 4 x 800 meter relay with my sister and two of my best friends. I also had a blast performing in the high school play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, my senior year. How is your family doing? My parents, who are both physicians, have retired and are enjoying their new roles as grandparents. My sister, Alissa Burkholder Murphy (Class of ’01) and her family, which includes my two nephews, moved to Baltimore last year. My sister teaches engineering at Johns Hopkins, which was her alma mater. It’s the first time that she and I have lived in the same city since high school, and it’s been really great having them here. If you could meet anyone (alive or dead), who would you choose and why? I could list a number of superstar doctors/scientists, or political leaders, or female sports icons that I’d love to meet, but, honestly, who would be my first choice? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler-- two hilarious, smart, bold, leading ladies in the male-driven field of comedy. Who is your role model and why? Growing up, my parents were important role models for me. My mom was one of just a few females in her med school class. Conversely, my med school class was the first one in the history of the school to have more women than men, so I’ve always felt very proud that she was among the pioneers who paved the way for me and my female classmates. And my dad is an ophthalmologist too, so clearly he was hugely influential in my career path. #yoursalisbury
