Skin Cancer Awareness

SUN SAFETY

Did you know:

  • 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime

  • 1 person dies of melanoma every hour

  • Your risk of developing melanoma doubles if you have had more than 5 sunburns

Protect yourself in 5 ways

  1. Slip on sun protective clothing

  2. Slop on SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours

  3. Slap on a broad brimmed hat

  4. Seek shade

  5. Slide on wrap around sunglasses

See your doctor or dermatologist if you notice changes in a mole or a new mole or skin lesion.

Look for one of these warning signs of skin cancer:

  • Asymmetry-one half looks different than the other half

  • Border-irregular edges

  • Color-varied shades of tan, brown or black

  • Diameter- typically larger than the size of a pencil eraser

  • Evolving - a mole or lesion that looks different than the rest or is changing in size, shape, or color
