Salisbury Community,

Over the past several weeks, we have experienced sadness, anger and fear caused by the tragic death of George Floyd and other racially motivated events across our country. As a learning community, we are intolerant of all words and actions of hate inside and outside of our schools, and we encourage all to take an active role in denouncing hatred in all its forms.

Our children are watching us and learning from how we listen and what we say and do in response to current events. How actively we engage now will shape their behavior in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world.

Let us look at these events as a clarion call to give back to our community and our country the caring, compassion, curiosity and acceptance we have declared part of our values. Racism, discrimination and hate must never be accepted as a part of our schools, our community or our country. And we must speak out against it.

Discussing racism and traumatic events with children can be challenging. To support you in these necessary conversations, we suggest some resources:

As a learning community we are imperfect, and we will continue to examine issues of inequality to more closely realize the learner-centered organization we have been working hard to design. We will continue to ensure that all of our learners, young and adult, are honored for the unique gifts they bring into this world and have access to the resources, programs, and experiences necessary to release those gifts to give back and better each other and our world.

We recognize that the sadness, anger and fear we are experiencing is in addition to the stressors created by a worldwide pandemic, stressors that are at the same time emotional, mental, physical and economic. Our learning community is committed to supporting one another through these very challenging times. If you are in need of support or resources, please reach out. We are here for you.
