Catching up with Salisbury graduate Alex Diamond

What is your full name?
Alexander Joseph Diamond

When did you graduate from Salisbury?
2017

I know you are attending Kutztown University. Tell us about your time there.
Kutztown University has been quite an eye-opening experience. I am a Library Science-Education major and a history minor. My main takeaway from being a student at Kutztown is that you have to be proactive by getting involved with activities and reaching out to professors. The student who fails is the one who doesn’t speak up at all, even during office hours, and stays in their room all day. During my time at Kutztown, I got involved in numerous activities and made many lifetime friends and helpful connections.

After you graduate from Kutztown, what will you do next?
My initial and still ideal plan is to work as an academic advisor or in progressively higher library roles in a college setting. With the uncertain hiring situation in higher education, I am also considering numerous middle and high school teaching roles--with Social Studies being the primary field I am interested in teaching in. I plan to get a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science and ideally a Masters of Arts in History as well over the next couple of years.

What are your summer plans?
I will be taking three summer classes online and I might travel when it is safe to do so. I am also working at the Weis Markets in Kutztown.

What have you learned through this pandemic?
I learned to be grateful for what I was able to do before, rather than wanting more. Things happen so quickly and nothing is guaranteed. Once this whole pandemic is lifted, I will slow things down and start to take life a day at a time.

What was your favorite high school memory?
My favorite athletic high school memory was going up to Bucknell University for the 2nd day of the boys 2A swimming tournament. My favorite academic high school memory is a tie between Mrs. Burns letting me shadow her for a day in the school library and the mock presidential election I ran in newspaper class with Mrs. Pacitti over the Falcon Apps mailing list.

What is your favorite movie or TV show and why?
Anything having to do with South Park, the movie included. I believe that the show is able to express a valuable perspective on the issues while still being incredibly funny and providing memorable moments.

How is your sister Lindsey doing?
Lindsey is doing great. She goes to Millersville University as a business management major, psychology minor. She is an RA and is in the Honors College. She will go to graduate school to be an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist.

If you could meet anyone (alive or dead), who would you choose and why?
I would meet my grammy Pearl and have a heart to heart conversation. Everyone said that she was a uniquely progressive person for her time and quite the jokester so I feel we could have bonded over a lot of things.

Who is your role model and why?
I have numerous role models that I take inspiration from, including many not listed. A short list includes Dr. R. Chad Brown in student success, Dr. Marlene Fares in academic advising, Prof. Ruth Perkins in academic librarianship, Mrs. Robin Burns in school librarianship, and Dr. Michael Gambone in history. All use customer service, critical inquiry, and enthusiasm to succeed in their fields and I want to emulate that in my career.
