Welcome to Second Grade

Please send a note regarding changes in your child’s schedule/transportation.

Please send an absence note to school the day your child returns to school after an illness.

We invite you to be a “Mystery Reader.” A “Mystery Reader” is a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle, babysitter, relative, or guardian who will come to our classroom at a scheduled time to read a story of his/her choice aloud to the class. The children should not know ahead of time who the “Mystery Reader” is. See the sign up sheet before you leave. *Please, no treats are necessary.* YOU are the treat!

Please encourage your child to complete homework assignments each night (M-Th). Assignments can be found in your child’s H.W. folder on the TO DO side of the folder. Completed assignments can then be placed on the DONE side of the folder.

Language Arts

Shared Reading in Second Grade will involve various genres such as fiction/non-fiction, mysteries, legends, and drama/poetry. Stories in the basal reader and trade books are grouped into themes throughout the year. In addition, students will be placed into flexible Guided Reading groups according to their ability. Students will also have Independent Reading time each day.

Writing will be done throughout the curriculum as well as in Writer’s Workshop. Through Writer’s Workshop, the students will experience many writing tasks such as fiction and non-fiction, thank you notes, poetry, re-telling, and summarizing (3.5 paragraph and First, Next, Then, and Last). Students are encouraged to spell introduced spelling words correctly when writing. Language mechanics such as punctuation, capitalization, and sentence structure will be incorporated.

New spelling lists will be given each week. Spelling lists will tie in with the phonics skill covered in class. Challenge words will be included. Test dates will vary (approximately every six days). Test words will be dictated.

Children will be taught patterns and numbers, addition and subtraction facts through 20, addition and subtraction of two and three digit numbers, place value through 1,000, calendar, time, money, geometry, fractions, and beginning multiplication. Problem solving is a daily component of the second grade math program. Problem solving strategies covered include: act it out, choose the equation, guess and check, use manipulatives, draw a picture, find a pattern, and make a table. The children will also be doing a Mad Minute daily.
